Krishna- The Supreme Personality of Godhead

    Krsna
    The Supreme Personality of Godhead
by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Krsna (pronounced "Krishna"),The Supreme Personality of Godhead, is a summary study of the tenth canto of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The Bhagavatam is an encyclopedic, 18,000 verse text—divided into twelve Cantos—chronicling many of Krishna's various incarnations over the millennia. It also describes the creation and cosmography of the material universes, and the lives of many pure devotees of Krishna and how they attained perfection.

The tenth canto of the Bhagavatam focuses on Krishna Himself and His activities when He appeared on earth five thousand years ago. In Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead—popularly known as "Krishna Book"—we see the private life of the Supreme Person. Behind all the omnipotence and majesty, Krishna is the all-attractive, fun-loving, perfect person, eternally reciprocating unlimited varieties of loving relationships with His devotees.

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada wrote "Krishna Book" before he had even fully completed his translation and commentary on the Bhagavatam. He wanted people to hear about Krishna the person and His activities, in English, from an authorized representative of the Krishna-bhakti tradition. As he mentions in his Introduction, this was so they wouldn't risk mistaking Krishna to be just another human being and his pastimes as mundane adventure/romance stories.

    Reviews

"Krishna has been too transforming a figure for too many people to remain confined to India or known only through the Bhagavad-gita. Here we have the rounding out of His story that has proven so fruitful for Indian art, song, dance, and devotion."

    —Dr. Robert B. Tapp
Professor of Humanities & Religious Studies, University of Minnesota

It should be said, however, that fans of adventure and romance will find nothing lacking in this contemporary recounting of Krishna's activities.

Bhagavad Gita As It Is (English) Hardbound by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Bhagavad-gita is universally renowned as the jewel of India’s spiritual wisdom. Spoken by Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, to His intimate devotee Arjuna, the Gita’s 700 concise verses provide a definitive guide to the science of self-realization. Indeed, there is no work even comparable in its revelations of man’s essential nature, his environment and, ultimately, his relationship with God.

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is uniquely qualified to present this English translation and commentary on Bhagavad-gita. He is the world’s foremost Vedic scholar and teacher, and he is also the current representative of the unbroken chain of fully self-realized spiritual masters beginning with Lord Krishna Himself. Thus, unlike other editions of the Gita, this one is presented as it is—without the slightest taint of adulteration of personal motivation. Replete with sixteen full-color plates, this new edition is certain to stimulate and enlighten any reader with its ancient yet thoroughly timely message.

“In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavad-gita, in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial.”

    —Henry David Thoreau

“I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad-gita. It was the fist of books’ it was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which in another rage and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us.”

    —Ralph Waldo Emerson

“When doubts haunt me, when disappoints stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day.”

    The Nectar of Devotion
    The Complete Science of Bhakti-yoga
by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
The Nectar of Devotion is Srila Prabhupada's summary study of Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu ("The Ocean of the Pure Nectar of Devotional Service") by Rupa Goswami, a direct disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Readers will find in The Nectar of Devotion many interesting and instructive pastimes of Krishna and His devotees, from a variety of Vedic scriptural sources, each meant to illustrate a particular aspect of rasa—relationship with Krishna—and to show how each manifests practically in one's life.

Srila Prabhupada specifically composed The Nectar of Devotion as an essential volume for practitioners of bhakti-yoga, Krishna consciousness. Part one consists of four "waves," the first being a general description of devotional service. The second concerns the regulative principles for executing devotional service, and the third wave, devotional service in ecstasy. In the fourth is the ultimate goal, love of God. The Nectar of Devotion explicitly describes all these topics along with their different symptoms.

Queen Kunti, a tragic and heroic figure, emerges from an explosive era in the history of ancient India. She was a central figure in a complex political drama that led to a bloody fratricidal war for the Indian throne. Yet through all her sufferings she found an inner wisdom and strength that carried her people through the time of crisis.

Kunti's spontaneous glorification of Lord Krishna and her description of the spiritual path are immortalized in the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana (Srimad-Bhagavatam), and they have been recited, chanted, and sung by sages and philosophers for thousands of years.

The Story of a Near-Death Experience
by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Near-death experiences (NDEs) are not new phenomena; the Srimad-Bhagavatam, written thousands of years ago, recounts this NDE occurring in the much deeper past:

Ajamila, a young, religious student, is drawn astray to a life of debauchery and crime. At the appointed hour of his death, he witnesses an extremely unusual conversation between the agents of death and the agents of the Supreme Person, Vishnu. Ajamila receives a second chance to live, and his life is transformed forever.

During the winter of 1970-71, Srila Prabhupada was traveling in India with some of his Western disciples. They had heard him speak about Ajamila several times, and at their request he gave a systematic series of lectures on Ajamila's history. This book includes the original Bhagavatam verses outlining Ajamila's NDE, selections from Srila Prabhupada's published commentary, and excerpts from transcriptions of his lectures during the '70-71 India tour.

    The Journey of Self-Discovery

    The Journey of Self Discovery
by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Journey of Self-Discovery is a collection of transcribed conversations and lectures by Srila Prabhupada on a variety of subjects, including the means for achieving global unity, the myth of scarcity, spiritual economics, superior evolutionary models, and predictions of the future state of the world.

Many of these pieces previously appeared in Back to Godhead magazine, and helpfully address the doubts that inevitably arise for those new to the Vedic view of greater reality.

While Srila Prabhupada published definitive, scholarly translations and commentaries on some of the world's most important ancient texts—Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Chaitanya Charitamrita—his printed talks found here in Journey of Self-Discovery capture the humorous, refreshing flavor of his lively debating style.

As the ambassador to the West of the age-old Krishna bhakti cult—which teaches practical devotional service to God in His most approachable and attractive form—Srila Prabhupada speaks with an authority that is hard to resist. His arguments for intelligent design, and the existence of a supremely intelligent person possessing such intelligence, have caused many skeptics, agnostics, and atheists to reassess their worldview.

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

    About

According to Vedic tradition, Kapila Muni is one of the twelve mahajanas—leading authorities on scripture—as well as an avatara of the Supreme Absolute Truth. He appeared to teach Sankhya; the ancient system of metaphysics and spiritual knowledge which forms an important part of India’s ancient philosophical heritage.

Kapila’s teachings are originally found in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Teachings of Lord Kapila is based on a unique series of Bhagavatam lectures presented in Mumbai, India, in the spring of 1974, by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. At the time of the Kapila lectures, Srila Prabhupada had just completed his written commentary on the section of the Bhagavatam dealing with Kapiladeva’s teachings. In these special lectures, Srila Prabhupada went into much greater detail in elucidating the verses and shed an even broader light upon these fascinating teachings.

Teachings of Lord Kapila—complete with original Sanskrit, translations, and purports—deals with such topics as the significance of the guru, the psychology of consciousness, the characteristics of a self-realized person, the science of meditation, the nature of transcendental knowledge, and the process of ultimate liberation.

Krishna Consciousness- The Topmost Yoga System

On July 29, 1971, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada delivered a lecture at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Speaking mostly to an audience of young college students, he addressed many popular misconceptions about the meaning and goal of yoga.

Yoga, he said, was once understood as a complete, focused lifestyle meant to bring one to godly consciousness. In the ancient world, this meant a life of seclusion and austerity.

Such yoga can't be practiced the same way in the modern world, yet the goal of yoga—union with the supreme—can be easily achieved by anyone, anywhere by the direct method of bhakti, devotional service; no sweat, Spandex, subscriptions, or expensive yoga mats required.

For anyone interested in yoga—academically, practically, spiritually, or otherwise—Krishna consciousness, the Topmost Yoga System is a concise and invigorating look at the history and purpose of genuine yoga, and the importance of bhakti for success in any kind of yoga.

  • The Path of Perfection

    The Path of Perfection

    The Path of Perfection
by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
In February of 1969, Srila Prabhupada gave a series of lectures in Los Angeles on the sixth chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, which deals with the yoga system. Path of Perfection is a collection of these historic talks.

"No one really wants to sit down and meditate. Why should we? We're meant for positive activity, for recreation, for pleasure."

A perfect life, in which the goal of yoga is reached, Srila Prabhupada explains, is dynamic and full of activity. Our nature is spiritual, and spirit is the essence of everything that lives. Real yoga means to connect our activities with the Supreme Spirit—in straightforward, practical ways. If perfection is possible, why settle for anything less?

"Perhaps you have seen pictures of Krishna, and if so, you have noticed that Krishna is always jolly. If you join His society, you will also become jolly. Have you ever seen pictures of Krishna working with a machine? Have you ever seen pictures of Krishna smoking? No, He is by nature full of pleasure, and if you unfold yourself in that way, you will also find pleasure."

In these absorbing talks, Srila Prabhupada deeply explores the philosophy of yoga as explained in the Sixth and Eighth Chapters of the Gita, showing clearly how these timeless teachings apply today. Learn about the nature of consciousness, techniques of meditation, karma, death, reincarnation, and even spiritual ecstasy.

Bhagavad Gita As It Is (English) Pocket Edition by His Divine Grace A.C.

    —Mohandas K. Gandhi

    Easy Journey to Other Planets

Ancient methods of space travel, independent of mechanical conveyances, which can still be used today.

Mass media makes a fuss over contemporary, mechanical attempts at space travel, but according to accounts found in India's Vedic literature, space travel is far from a new invention; it has always been possible. If we are to believe such evidence, yogis and higher beings have the capacity to travel freely throughout the cosmos via subtle technologies that are practically unknown to us.

Easy Journey To Other Planets explains how, using subtle, spiritual energy, anyone can travel to other planets and see the wonders of material creation. Also, those who wish to may travel beyond the material creation to the spiritual world, the ultimate destination, from which one never has to return to the limited world of matter.

Srila Prabhupada wrote Easy Journey to Other Planets—with its frequent mention of "antimatter" and "antimaterial particles"—as a short treatise in response to the mid-20th century "space race" era, when nations such as the U.S. and U.S.S.R. were obsessed with exploration of the moon, etc. by means of rocket-powered spacecraft. In the book, the author questions the ultimate significance of such endeavors, while pointing out that the exploration of material space is neither a new idea nor the most intelligent one, from the spiritual point of view.

    Sri Isopanisad

    Sri Isopanisad
    Discovering the Original Person
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Sri Isopanishad is one of the first books Srila Prabhupada published in the course of establishing the Hare Krishna movement in the Western world. Its eighteen mantras—Vedic hymns—are meant to focus the mind in meditation on the Supreme Person, Krishna.

Sri Isopanishad's mantras direct our attention toward how the Supreme Person is the complete whole of existence, and that all manifestations emanating from Him—including our bodies and the world we inhabit—are also complete in and of themselves. The Isa—"supreme controller"—for whom Isopanishad is named, is described as both far away and near, walking and not walking, and both within and outside of everything.

In the book's Introduction—adapted from a lecture Srila Prabhupada gave in London in 1968—he explains how the Vedas' teachings are perfect; Vedic sound is not of this world, not created by man, and thus not subject to human frailty and imperfection. Isopanishad is one of the principal Upanishads in Vedic literature that present the ultimate philosophical conclusions of all scripture.

Srila Prabhupada composed Sri Isopanishad with the same scholarly standards as his Bhagavad-gita As It Is and Srimad-Bhagavatam, providing the original Sanskrit verse, its English transliteration, word-for-word Sanskrit-English equivalents, translations and purports. In his words, "This makes the book very authentic and scholarly and makes the meaning self-evident."

  • Life Comes From Life

    Life Comes From Life

Life Comes From Life is an impromptu but brilliant critique of some of the presumptions and theories of modern science and scientists. Science has long assumed and promoted the idea that everything we see around is made of matter, and that all natural phenomena, including biological, physiological, psychological and cosmological, can ultimately be broken down and explained in terms of the workings of fundamental particles such as electrons and protons governed by physical and chemical laws. In particular Srila Prabhupada, one of the greatest philosophers and scholars of the twentieth century, analyses and uncovers the hidden and unfounded assumptions underlying two of the modern science’s principal theories – the theories of the origin of life and the theory of diversity of biological species (theory of evolution).
